Ash vs Evil Dead Attachments Announced

We are pleased to announce the three director attachments to the Ash vs Evil Dead (AVED) production. They are:

Regan Hall
Louise Leitch
Rene Naufahu

Each of the three will spend approximately 23 days shadowing one of the main unit directors through pre-production, shoot and post production.

Additionally, thanks to further NZFC and Starz Evil Dead NZ Ltd support, Roseanne Liang will spend 10 days with the AVED stunt coordinator, and Joe Lonie will shadow the second unit director for up to 20 days.

The attachments were hotly contested and we congratulate the successful directors on their selection for this incredible opportunity.

VENUE CHANGE: Collaborators Series with Screen Composers Guild of NZ – A Relationship Guide

Please note our venue change for the Collaborators Series event “A Relationship Guide”.

The event has moved from Horse & Trap to the Cornwall Room in the Surrey Hotel, 465 Great North Road, Grey Lynn. Park on Great North Road or Crummer Road, grab your drinks at the bar upstairs and then bring them down to the Cornwall Room next to reception at 7, where the discussion will take place.

Come along to our next Collaborators Series event, “A Relationship Guide” with the Screen Composers Guild of NZ. This workshop will look at the role of the composer, music’s impact on a project and how to nurture a productive director/composer relationship.

Screen composers Bruce Lynch and Marshall Smith will join director Briar March in a discussion moderated by director Roseanne Liang.

The Ground We Won – Film Talk

We’re very excited to be screening The Ground We Won, a documentary feature by DEGNZ member Christopher Pryor, at our next Film Talk with Rialto Cinemas.

Following the film, there will be a Q&A and discussion with Chris, moderated by DEGNZ board member and documentary maker Richard Riddiford.

This quintessentially Kiwi doco was shot in Reporoa and follows rugby-playing farmers trying to bounce back from a string of defeats.

Call for applications: Feature Documentary Editing Workshop with Annie Collins

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ invites applications for a feature film documentary editing workshop with celebrated editor Annie Collins.

Annie is one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded editors in both documentary and drama. Her experience is extensive, encompassing projects with the likes of Merata Mita (Patu!) and Barry Barclay (The Neglected Miracle) to more recently with Rob Sarkies (Consent: The Louise Nicholas Story) and Jess Feast (Gardening with Soul).

Annie has a very clear process that lies at the heart of her successful feature documentaries, and which she would like to share with others.

You will cover:

  • What IS the Kaupapa?
  • Who are we talking to?
  • When it is essential for the director NOT to be present?
  • How to avoid superficial handling of the footage.
  • Systems that will give editor and director perfect freedom to create.
  • When to answer questions and when to let the questions answer themselves.
  • Finding and understanding what isn’t being said.
  • Working collaboratively with the director.

Eight positions are available on the workshop to be held in Wellington for editors with medium to advanced experience in documentary. Each editor will have an Avid to use with footage supplied.

The workshop will begin with an opening session on Friday 5 June from 6 – 9pm, followed by two full days on the Saturday and Sunday. Lunch will be provided each full day.

The selection panel will comprise Annie, and guild president and editor Peter Roberts. The selection will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Travel assistance may be available from the NZ Film Commission.
