Upcoming World Premiere of Encounters

Eight emerging kiwi directors came together to tell eight stories of love, life and death in this multi-genre feature film. Encounters was designed to give up and coming directors the opportunity to collaborate and gain experience in the making of feature films. Seven years in the making, DEGNZ members and two of the films’ directors, Chaz Harris (producer and writer) and Scott Milligan (lead editor) are finally releasing the film to the public. The one night only screening will take place at The Embassy Theatre, on Wellington’s biggest screen, and will be followed by a Q&A with some of the filmmakers.

New Zealand Premiere of Shadow in the Cloud

Last week, DEGNZ board member and the film’s director, Roseanne Liang, was joined by kiwi cast members, crew and whanau to celebrate the first screening of Shadow in the Cloud in Aotearoa. Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, Liang could not attend the world premiere at Toronto Film Festival but said that “her heart is full” after having experienced the premiere in her home country of Aotearoa. The premiere hosted an exhibit featuring Maude’s infamous flight officer suit and the very Sperry used in the making of this NZ action film. Shadow in the Cloud is currently in NZ cinemas.

Anna Duckworth Selected for 2021 Screenwriting Lab

Congratulations to director Anna Duckworth (DEGNZ) for being one of six screenwriters selected to participate in this years’ Show Me Shorts’ Screenwriting Lab. The mentoring scheme aims to assist writers in developing their ideas for short films. In the past, DEGNZ members have participated in the lab, developed their films and premiered the final cut at various film festivals, including, Mark Prebbles’ Baby?, which premiered at Show Me Shorts and Claire van Beek’s Daniel which premiered at Melbourne International Film Festival. This is a great opportunity and we recommend you consider this for 2022.

Auckland Pride Festival presents Proud Voices On-Screen

This half day event is for creators of film, series and documentary from queer, LGBTQIA+ and rainbow community. A section titled PROUD SHORTS features two short films directed by A.J.Greenwood, Individuality and Hunter.

The event also features a panel discussion with the creators of Rūrangi. Director, Max Currie (DEGNZ), alongside the film’s writer/producer, Cole Myers and producer, Craig Gainsborough, will discuss their experience enabling members of the transgender community to fill roles in front and behind the camera and their vision for the future of queer storytelling in Aotearoa.

Proud Voices on Screen is a new, non-profit organisation that aims to support and celebrate queer, LGBTQIA+, rainbow and takatāpui content creators and their screen content in Aotearoa.

Members Behind-the-Scenes of Frickin Dangerous Bro Series

The series follows comedy trio Frickin Dangerous Bro. made up of Jamaine Ross, James Roque and Pax Assadi on their stand-up show tour around Aotearoa. The programme has received great reviews and is just another example of how kiwi-comedy series are thriving in New Zealand. We are excited to see the work of both members Hweiling Ow who co-directed episode one and three of the series, and Emma Savage, who was Edit Assistant on the series.
