Show Me Shorts 2022: Nominees for Best Director and Best Editor

Show Me Shorts 2022 have announced the nominees for their annual Awards night. Seventeen short films were nominated across eight categories including Best Director and Best Editor. Members Win Asian Academy Creative Arts Awards

The winners have been announced for the 2022 Asian Academy Creative Arts Awards, with DEGANZ members recognised.

The Asian Academy Creative Arts Awards is Asia-Pacific’s most prestigious awards for creative excellence. The best of the best from 16 nations representing the region’s content industry gather each December, in Singapore, when the Lion City hosts the annual awards.

Season 2 of Mystic won a Best Children’s Programme (One off/Series) Award. David Stubbs (DEGANZ) is the series producer, while fellow members Aidee Walker and Caroline Bell-Booth directed on the series. Meanwhile, DEGANZ members Kerri Roggio and Peter Roberts served as two of the four editors on the series.

Aidee Walker also won a Best Direction (Fiction) Award for her work on TVNZ’s Kid Sister. The series was also a national winner for Best Comedy Programme.

Episode 4, titled Albularyo, of anthology series Beyond the Veil won a Best Single Drama/Telemovie/Anthology Episode Award. Mia Maramara both wrote and directed, while editor Brendon Chan cut the episode.

Recently DEGANZ was lucky enough to be joined by Sharon Lark, an independent VFX producer and consultant, and Stan Alley, a VFX supervisor, to shed light on the power of VFX and how it can open doors to new story possibilities.

With examples from their own work and from the audience, Sharon and Stan share advice on the ideal relationship between directors and VFX, what different budgets can get you, and how VFX can serve your story. Enjoy this talk on The DEGANZ Podcast.

About Sharon Lark

Having worked for 20 years as an independent VFX Producer in the UK on films such as Prince of Persia (Disney/Bruckheimer), Tomb Raider (Paramount), Chronicles of Narnia (Disney) and Casino Royale (Colombia Pictures/Eon Productions), Sharon returned nine years ago to NZ. Here, she was originating Producer for the award-winning Children’s TV series Thunderbirds are Go, before moving onto TV Drama series Cleverman (Aus-NZ co-pro) for two seasons.

Sharon has also been working as a VFX Consultant matching projects and budgets to VFX Facilities & Post Houses. Her most recent work in this role has been on The Luminaries (BBC / Working Title) as well as feature films I am Woman and Invisible Man (Goalpost Pictures Aus). Her latest show Mr Corman (A24/Apple) encompassed working with multiple VFX Facilities and building an in-house team of graphic artists to create a unique collaged world integrated over the 10-part series.

 

Stan Alley

About Stan Alley

With nearly 17 years of experience working in the visual effects department, Stan has worked onset on films from independent local features to some of the most ambitious effects driven movies ever produced. From local films, such as What We Do in the Shadows, to big budget films, such as The Hobbit and The Avengers.

His most recent work includes being a VFX Supervisor on Wellington Paranormal and Mr Corman. Stan is well versed in pre, principle and post production for VFX.

Michelle Savill to Direct on Netflix Hit Series Sex Education

Congratulations to DEGANZ member and Incubator alum Michelle Savill who is directing on the fourth series of much loved Netflix series Sex Education. Season 4 is currently filming in Wales.

While not much is known about what episodes or how many episodes Michelle is directing, after the end of last season it is sure to be an entertaining season. Sex Education is a comedy-drama series that follows the lives of the students, staff and parents of the fictional Moordale Secondary School.

Season 4 is created and written by Laurie Nunn. Other directors on Season 4 are Dominic Leclerc (UK) and Alyssa McClelland (AU).
