Film Talk: Fiona Clark – Unafraid

On February 21, following its premiere at NZIFF last year, DEGANZ is looking forward to hosting a Film Talk of Fiona Clark: Unafraid in association with Rialto Cinemas. The documentary brings attention to notable photographer Fiona Clark and her work, which captured the burgeoning gay liberation movement and vibrant queer scene in 1970’s New Zealand.

Following the screening, audiences will be joined by the director, DEGANZ member Lula Cucchiara, and Fiona Clark herself for a Q&A session moderated by Eloise Veber.

There Is No ‘I’ in Threesome: The Pursuit of Intimacy – Online

Intimacy can be tricky to bring to life on screen whether it be in a documentary or a drama. When done correctly, though, within an environment of safety and trust, it can organically unfold in front of our eyes.

To begin the new year, DEGANZ brings together director Ollie Lucks and editor Francis Glenday in a session moderated by Annie Collins to discuss the interesting and unique process of writing, directing and editing documentary There Is No ‘I’ in Threesome. This doco was one of the first to work with an intimacy co-ordinator. Discover what it took to bring such an intimate and personal story to the screen, the challenges (Spoiler Alert) of a scripted piece masquerading as a non-scripted one, and find out why the director and editor relationship is so important. Francis admits that โ€œit was an unusual one because the naked talent on screen isnโ€™t normally sitting next to you when you’re cutting itโ€.

About Ollie Lucks

Jan Oliver Lucks (Ollie) was born in Germany to an Iranian/Indian mother and German father. In 2005 he moved to Dunedin to study film. Together with Max Bellamy in 2014, he directed haunted baritone tale The Characteristics of C-Minor, which screened on BBC Knowledge and at a number of global festivals.

In 2015 Ollie began tailing ex-pro wrestler Wilbur McDougall for a popular Loading Docs short Wilbur Force, which premiered at NZIFF and became a Short of the Week on Vimeo. After the short was picked up by Mฤori Television it became a feature-length film titled Wilbur:The King in the Ring.

He has written, directed and edited since 2014. His credits include The Characteristics of C-Minor, Wilbur Force, Wilbur:The King in the Ring, and There Is No ‘I’ in Threesome.

About Francis Glenday

Francis Glenday is an editor & animator with 20 years experience, cutting on a wide range of projects from film through television and everything in between.

He has a long line of credits including POI E: The Story of our Song, for which he was nominated for Best Documentary Editor at the Rialto Channel NZ Film Awards 2017, This Town, Grand Designs New Zealand, Herbs: Songs of Freedom, Nigel Latta Blows Stuff Up, On Thin Ice and many more. He is currently in post-production for the documentary Frocks and Divas.

To close the year, director Jesse Griffin and editor Stuart Boone join DEGANZ to discuss the fascinating process of writing, directing and editing the hit, unscripted comedy series Educators. Discover how to mine a scene for golden nuggets of truth, how to find the funniest moments in the edit suite and bring order to improvised comedy. As the duo admits, โ€œItโ€™s like putting together a jigsaw puzzle except the pieces have nothing on them…โ€

About Jesse Griffin

Jesse started doing sketch comedy while at Otago University in the early 90โ€™s with Duncan Sarkies, Te Radar and Aaron Watson. After training in physical theatre at the John Bolton School in Melbourne in 1995, he formed the comedy trio the 4 Noels and performed throughout Australia, the UK and NZ until 2007. Jesse began performing country music character Wilson Dixon in 2004, performing live and on televised galas throughout NZ, Australia and the UK, along with a series for BBC Radio and a TVNZ comedy special.

He was the creative exec producer, writer and director for Comedy For Cure Kids from 2012 to 2015 making the song โ€œFeel Insideโ€ with the FOTC amongst other things. He has acted, written and directed for TV since 2010. His credits include 7 Days, Jono and Ben, Would I Lie To You, Word Up, Have You Been Paying Attention, Funny Girls, Educators, Last at 11, 800 Words, and Talkback.

Stuart Boone is an accomplished television editor with over 25 years experience. Specialising in factual and documentary series, Stu is sought after for his skill at crafting story with humanity and humour.

He has a long line of credits including New York Festivals 2020 award-winning unscripted comedy series Educators, Grand Designs series 3-5, Forensics NZ, Making New Zealand, My Big Blue Backyard, Channel 4 UKโ€™s Orangutan Jungle School, Animal Planetโ€™s Redwood Kings, as well as The NZ Film Commissionโ€™s 100 Men.
