The Last Saint Q&A Screening

We’re excited to be hosting a special Q&A screening of The Last Saint, a powerful NZ film about a teenage Polynesian boy living in the heart of Auckland city. 

With his P-addicted mother well on the way to going completely off the rails, three people enter his life – each with a promise – and each with the power to destroy.

When: 3.30pm Sunday 24 August

Moderated by Kirstin Marcon (dir. The Most Fun You Can Have Dying)

This is your opportunity to meet Rene Naufahu (Director), Joe Naufahu (“Pinball”), Matthew Horrocks (Producer), Thomas Rose (Composer) and OJ Raj (Composer) who will join you after the movie to answer your questions and talk about the film.

The Q&A will take place after the 3.30pm screening. We hope to see you all there!

Editing Mentorship with Justine Wright – Apply Now!

DEGNZ is pleased to call for applications for an editing mentorship with acclaimed editor, Justine Wright (Touching The Void, The Last King of Scotland, The Iron Lady).

This is an opportunity for a New Zealand editor, with proven talent, to benefit from collegial advice and international support as they move to the next stage of their career. You do need to be a member of DEGNZ to apply.

The mentorship offers 20 – 30 hours of Justine’s time, some by Skype and some in person, between now and the end of the year.

About Justine:
Justine Wright grew up in New Zealand and moved to London in 1990 where she was trained in a commercials editing house and first cut ads, music videos, and short films before branching out into editing documentary features and then narrative features.

She has worked with director Kevin Macdonald on a number of features, including Academy Award-winning documentary feature One Day in September, for which she received the British Independent Film Award for Best Technical Achievement(Behind the Camera), BAFTA winning Touching the Void and The Last King of Scotland, State of Play, The Eagle and just completed, Kevin’s latest feature Black Sea. Other features cut by Justine include Locke written and directed by Steve Knight starring Tom Hardy, The Iron Lady directed by Phyllida Lloyd and starring Meryl Streep; Daniel Gordon’s The Game of Their Lives, which was named Best Sports Documentary at the British Television Awards and earned the Greerson and British Independent Film Awards nominations; Patrick Harkins’ The Final Curtain, starring Peter O’Toole; and Saul Metzstein’s Late Night Shopping, which won three BAFTA (Scotland) Awards including Best Feature Film. Recently, Justine contributed to Playhouse Presents for Sky Arts where she cut two short films; Jeremy’s Brock’s Walking the Dogs starring Emma Thompson, and Idris Elba’s directorial debut, The Pavement Psychologist, with Anna Friel. Justine has also been a consultant editor on two feature documentaries, In the Shadow of the Moon and Deep Water.

We’ve long recognised a gender imbalance in key creative roles in the film industry but the release of recent research has highlighted our concern. Last year fewer than 2% of the top 100 box office films in the US were directed by women. Read the statistics here. New Zealand figures might be better, but not by much. Meet_the_Directors

This is a fantastic opportunity to hear direct from international filmmakers about how they bought their film to the screen. For more information about the films they will be discussing, and their screening times as part of the festival, see below:


Sophie Hyde – 52 Tuesdays.
Australian born Sophie Hyde won Sundance’s World Cinema Director Award, and Berlin’s youth jury award, the Crystal Bear, with this striking first feature. Set in Adelaide on 52 consecutive Tuesdays, the film follows a year in the life of Billie (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) who, along with the usual social and sexual questioning that 16-year-olds go through, is also responding to the gender transition being undertaken by her mother (played by non-gender-conforming Del Herbert-Jane).

Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine – The Galapagas Affair
Almost improperly entertaining, this documentary who-dunnit spins a tale of utopian ideals, sexual intrigue
 and murderous jealousy – all on tiny Floreana, one of the Galapagos Islands. The events it describes were a media sensation in the 30s, thanks in large measure to the enthusiastic on-film cavorting of the story’s flamboyant femme fatale. Filmmakers Dayna Goldfine and Dan Geller (Ballets Russes) have restored a cornucopia of reportage, archival film and photography and enlisted top-line voice talent, including Cate Blanchett, to explore this bizarre tale anew.

Come and hear these industry heavyweights demystify distribution and discuss new ways of working together to reach new audiences.

MICHAEL ELDRED is currently a distributor with Madman NZ, having worked also at Dendy, Polygram and Hoyts Distribution in Australia and in New Zealand as an independent distributor. Local films he has released include OUT OF THE BLUE, the smash hit BOY, THE ORATOR (which he also associate produced) and WHITE LIES. Presently he is working with the team releasing WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS.
CHRIS MATTHEWS is a committed film buff, currently Head of Programming for Event Cinemas. Previously he has worked for Hoyts. Chris is known in the industry for his love of cinema and his uncanny instinct for picking winners.
ELIZABETH TROTMAN started her career with Disney in NZ and Hong Kong, then worked for Warner Brothers in London with industry giants such as William Friedkin on the re-release of The Exorcist and Stanley Kubrick on the release of Eyes Wide Shut. She moved to Australia to work for BBC Worldwide, before moving back to NZ in 2002 to take a job with Hoyts. Over the past 10 years she has distributed more than 100 movies and worked with a number of NZ directors. She is now the General Manager of STUDIOCANAL NZ.
DAVID WHITE is an expert in digital film distribution and CEO of independent film VOD provider, IndieReign.com, an online marketplace filmmakers use to sell directly to independent film lovers. David advises filmmakers, distributors and festivals on digital distribution, sales and marketing strategies. He is also CEO of Shift72.com, which creates software used by companies around the world to power their own branded VOD platforms.
JASMIN MCSWEENY (panel moderator) is responsible for the promotion of New Zealand films in New Zealand and internationally. She is NZ Film Commission’s first point of contact for film media enquiries and international festivals and markets. Since joining the NZFC, she has worked on the marketing campaigns for films such as Black Sheep, Boy, The World’s Fastest Indian and The Orator (O le Tulafale).
