‘Frozen – My Eggs and Me’ Opens Show Me Shorts Iranian Short Film Nights

DEGANZ member Shamin Yazdani‘s docu-short Frozen – My Eggs and Me is opening the Show Me Shorts Iranian Short Film Nights across the motu.

Made as part of the Day One Shorts initiative, the film follows Shamin on the brink of a mid-thirties birthday. Single and feeling uncertain about the future, she embarks on a deeply personal journey to confront a question she’s long been avoiding: should she freeze her eggs?

What begins as a question of motherhood soon reveals itself to be intertwined with something much bigger: her identity as the daughter of Iranian migrants. Now, as she explores this significant life decision, she unpacks the echoes of her parents’ sacrifices and the invisible threads of history that shape how she sees her future.

Frozen – My Eggs and Me has become more than a documentary about fertility and reproductive rights; it’s a reflection on how the ghosts of past struggles shape the decisions we make today. It’s a journey of navigating the tension between personal autonomy and inherited pressures, and the subtle ways that trauma—sometimes unnoticed—lives within us.

While best known for its annual short film festival, Show Me Shorts celebrates global cinema year-round through curated screenings of international films.

Joining Frozen – My Eggs and Me for this screening are five other shorts from top Iranian filmmakers, bringing together an intimate, surprising, and deeply human collection of stories.

The Iranian Short Film Nights will be held in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland on 21 July and in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington and Ōtautahi Christchurch on 22 July.
