Call for Applications: Documentary Editing Masterclass with Award-winning Editor Doug Blush

Directors & Editors Guild of NZ invites editors to apply for a Feature Documentary Editing Masterclass in Auckland with American editor Doug Blush.

Doug BlushDoug Blush is a multi award-winning editor who has worked on over 50 feature documentaries and TV programmes, and has been nominated five times for Best Editing at the Sundance Film Festival. His recent credits include Oscar-winning theatrical hit 20 Feet From Stardom, which won him an ACE Eddie Award for Best Documentary Editing. With wife Lisa Klein, Doug co-directed Of Two Minds and follow-up film The S Word. 

The Masterclass will consist of two separate days on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 March.

Day One: Interactive Seminar

Doug will deliver an interactive seminar on character, story and message  for up to a total of 20 participants. Editors are welcome to bring their directors along on the day.

Topics covered on Day One will include:

  • The Documentary/Narrative “wall” and how to break it
  • Beginning a documentary and editing strategies for laying out a narrative
  • Developing characters with true arcs and growth
  • Tapping into narrative story elements for documentary
  • Ending your film by considering story and message

Day Two: Project Consultation for up to 6 projects

Doug will run a project consultation on Day Two for up to 6 selected feature documentary projects. Editors are invited to submit their project currently in post-production for feedback.

Selected participants will be required to bring 10-15 minutes of their project in QuickTime format for class discussion and feedback, and must be comfortable with sharing their projects in a confidential environment. Selected editors are welcome to bring their directors on the day.

 

Cost: DEGNZ members free, Non-members $100 – selected editors can bring their director for free.
When: Saturday 18 March, 9am – 5pm & Sunday 19 March, 9am – 4pm.
Where: TBC, Auckland

Lunch will be provided each day.

Travel assistance may be available for DEGNZ members coming from out of Auckland.

  • links to samples of your work
  • a maximum one-page letter stating why you should be selected. Please indicate if you would like your director to attend with you.

Rialto Channel NZ Film Award Winners Announced

The Rialto Channel NZ Film Awards (nicknamed Moas) were held on Saturday night at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds, a night to celebrate New Zealand’s brilliant filmmaking talent.

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ Best Documentary Director award went to David Stubbs for Belief: The Possession of Janet Moses. A special congratulations also goes out to our members who took home awards:

Sam Neill presented the Services to Cinema Award to Gaylene Preston for her outstanding contributions to New Zealand film.

Best Editor went to Jonno Woodford-Robinson for his work on Mahana with Michael Horton, while Simon Coldrick won Best Documentary Editor for Tickled.

Ivan Barge’s Madam Black picked up Best Short film and Angela Bloomfield won Best Short Film Actress for her role in self-directed short Linda’s List.

Winners were decided by a judging committee that is totally off-shore based, taking into consideration a total of 19 drama features, 9 documentary features and 12 short films in various categories.

If you weren’t able to be there on the night, you can celebrate the Rialto Channel NZ Film Awards on Saturday February 25 at 5.25pm on Sky’s Rialto Channel 39, featuring red-carpet coverage with film vlogger Francesca Rudkin chatting to all the stars and filmmakers.

The Rehearsal Room brings together professionals – actors and directors – in a safe, supportive environment to practise working with each other on scenes under the guidance of an experienced moderator.

“Directors need as much practise… spending time with actors as they can get. It’s such an important relationship and so often writer/directors, especially, spend so much time by themselves with a script… and very little importance is placed on being able to direct actors.” – Past actor participant

REGISTER on our event page to have your name in the draw to participate. For each event 4 directors and 8 actors will be selected. ONLY Actors Equity actors and DEGNZ directors are permitted entry to The Rehearsal Room.

You need only register once. Your name will remain in the draw for future Rehearsal Rooms unless you ask us to remove it. If you are selected, we’ll email or phone you to confirm your participation.

 

Moderator – Peter Feeney
After moderating two excellent Rehearsal Rooms in Auckland and Wellington in 2016, Peter Feeney will bring his knowledge and insights to Christchurch.

Peter’s 20-year-plus acting CV ranges from NZ-shot US shows (Spartacus), to kids TV (Secret Agent Men, The Cul de Sac), comedy (Auckland Daze) drama (Abandoned), commercials and film: he won rave reviews as a mad scientist in Black Sheep. Peter also teaches acting, directs a bit, does occasional travel writing and helps raise his three young children.

 

Who is The Rehearsal Room for?
Professional actors and directors. It is open to Actors Equity and DEGNZ members of all levels of experience, from novices to virtuosos.

 

Material
Directors will be asked to provide a two-character scene (2 pages) or, if you prefer, a scene will be provided for you. Directors and actors will receive scripts in advance.

 

Structure of the event
Directors and actors will spend time rehearsing their scenes, with emphasis on connection and content.

After morning tea, participants will block their scenes, before presenting them for shooting, followed by viewing and discussion. The shooting is a wide shot only, intended as a means to review performance, not for directors to direct camera.

 

The Rehearsal Room is hosted by Directors & Editors Guild of New Zealand and the Equity Foundation, with financial support from New Zealand Film Commission.

DEGNZ Supports DGA, SAG-AFTRA Denouncement of Trump’s Immigration Policy

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ (DEGNZ) fully supports the denouncement by the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) of President Donald Trump’s executive order barring people from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somaila, Sudan and Yemen entering the United States.

“It is patently discriminatory to single out people solely by nationality or religion,” said DEGNZ President Howard Taylor.

“Law-abiding artists such as Iranian director Ashgar Farhadi who is prevented from attending the Academy Awards or any other law-abiding person should be treated equally regardless of race, gender, creed, disability, sexual orientation or country of birth.”

The DGA and SAG-AFTRA objections followed the Writers Guild of America’s statement blasting Trump’s 27 January order to suspend entry of refugees to for United States for 120 days, impose an indefinite ban on refugees from Syria, and a 90-day ban on citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries.

Trump’s ban has generated significant condemnation and concern in the creative and technology sectors with the Motion Picture Association of America, the gaming industry, Google, Netflix, Reddit and many other companies and organisations deeply opposed to the new immigration policy.

“The screen industry is now global,” added Taylor. The movement of artists and their works must flow freely and not be impeded by xenophobic policy that hinders expression or basic human rights.”
