Rehearsal & Performance is a hands-on workshop focused on assisting directors and actors to work better collaboratively to achieve great on screen performances.

Guided by actor/director Kathy McRae, participants will explore a workshop scene in groups (one director, two actors) in a safe and non-pressured environment. Lunch is provided.

We are excited to have Kathy back to lead Rehearsal & Performance in Auckland following fantastic response to her facilitation in Christchurch earlier this year.

Kathy McRaeKathy McRae has over 20 years of directing experience under her belt. Initially trained as an actor at Toi Whakaari, Kathy began directing theatre in 1997. She directed for South Pacific Pictures for seven years working on Shortland Street, Go Girls and Nothing Trivial and she directed for the second series of Filthy Rich. Her short film Abandon Ship was chosen for TIFFKids as well as other international festivals.

She recently made a return to acting, portraying convicted murderer Helen Milner in telefeature Catching the Black Widow, and in 2017 she directed A Doll’s House at Circa Theatre, Emily Perkin’s modern adaptation of Ibsen’s original play. Over the last few years she has also been writing and teaching directing and screen-acting.

Spots are limited to four directors and eight actors. If your name is selected, DEGNZ will contact you directly to confirm your participation. Only members of DEGNZ and Equity NZ are eligible to register.

Preparation

Selected directors and actors will be expected to do some script prep beforehand. DEGNZ will provide the scene at least one week in advance.

 

The Rehearsal & Performance series is hosted by Directors & Editors Guild of NZ with the support of Equity New Zealand and funding from the New Zealand Film Commission.

Table Reads Final 2018 Round Now Open

A core cast – max six actors – together with a writer+director team OR writer/director will collaborate on each script-in-development table read.

The script must have a director attached and have been through a development process.

Four Table Reads per year on Saturdays @NZWG HQ in Grey Lynn.

How to Submit a Script

DEGNZ and NZWG members are invited to apply for the script component.

Submit a full-length draft feature film script for your name to go into the draw for a day-long table read (names remain for subsequent draws).

WRITER + DIRECTOR* (OR WRITER/DIRECTOR) – Submit script via email to GuildHQ@nzwg.org.nz – Please check these details before you enter:

*Either/both must be a member(s) of NZWG/DEGNZ:

  • A solo Writer/Director must be a member of either NZWG or DEGNZ.
  • In a Writer-Director team, the Writer must be a member of NZWG, AND the Director must be a member of DEGNZ.

When you enter, please include this information:

  • name of writer, and if they belong to NZWG
  • name of director, and if they belong to DEGNZ

Natalie has worked in the Film and TV industry as both an accountant and in the sound department worldwide for over 16 years. She is an Associate Chartered Accountant who completed her mentored training at BDO Chartered Accountants and the NZ Film Commission. Natalie also supplies short to medium term furnished accommodation to the Film and TV industry with her husband, Brendan.

Directors Toolkit with Danny Mulheron – Auckland

Call for applications. The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ presents a two-day practical guide for emerging directors to be held in Auckland on 15-16 September.

New Zealand director Danny Mulheron will draw on his extensive experience to deliver this interactive and informative workshop, which ran in Wellington last year.

Day One topics will include:

  • The Director and the Script, Or: God I’m bored, why?
  • Text, Subtext and Context, Or: “Help, I’m struggling for depth?”
  • Observing Human Behaviour and Emotions, Or: On preferring what you don’t want…and recognising it.
  • The #1 Secret of the Actor/Director Relationship, Or: Don’t fall in love with them…too much?
  • Tools of the Director, Or: How to keep out of the way. It’s what you don’t do that counts.

Day Two will guide participants on working with actors, script reads, rehearsing, shooting and blocking through the use of demonstration and class exercises.

Lunch and refreshments provided.

About Danny Mulheron

Danny MulheronSince his graduation from the New Zealand Drama School in 1983, Danny has become an experienced director, writer and actor in all mediums – stage, screen and television. He is known as an ‘actor’s director’ due to his particular strength in directing actors and getting extraordinary performances.

Danny has directed award-winning television dramas, feature-length documentaries and smash hit theatre productions. The most recent work aired in NZ was Why does love?, a rock and roll movie about Kiwi rock band The Dance Exponents. Prior to that he directed all six episodes of the Hillary TV series for TVNZ. Other TV movies include The Kick, Rage and Eruption. Fresh Meat was a lesbian cannibal grind house movie for the Gibson Group, which made it to the NYC Tribeca Film Festival.​

He is currently in pre-production for Runaway Millionaires a TV movie for TVNZ and then moves immediately into Jonah. This is a 2 x 90 minutes TV drama for TV3, the story of Jonah Lomu. As a writer, he has two other screenplays in early development.

This practical workshop will help you to learn how to identify and most importantly deal with uncomfortable situations.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their workspace or know how to respond when they don’t!

This presentation by Debbi Tohill, Executive Director of RPE (Rape Prevention Education) is a precursor to future workshops SWAG (Screen Women’s Action Group) will be organising. This will be a two-hour intensive covering the basics:

Exactly what is sexual harassment?
The continuum to sexual violence
Keeping yourself safe
Creating a safe environment
Knowing your rights
Reporting
Making your own decisions
