Call for Applications. DEGNZ invites directors to apply now for Rehearsal Dynamics, taught by New Zealand actor Jennifer Ward-Lealand. This 1-day workshop will be held in Auckland on Saturday 22 September.

Deepening and Enriching the Actor’s Performance

At Rehearsal Dynamics, five participants will direct actors in short scenes under the guidance of Jennifer Ward-Lealand. There will be a strong emphasis on identifying craft to aid the rehearsal process and developing a language to confidently engage with actors.

Five directors will be selected to participate. In addition, DEGNZ will offer up to seven directors a place in the workshop as an active observer. Observers will also have the opportunity to learn practical knowledge and a vocabulary for working with actors.

Participating directors will be sent the script at least two weeks ahead of the workshop.

About Jennifer Ward-Lealand

Since training at Auckland’s influential Theatre Corporate, Jennifer has worked extensively in theatre, film, television, musical and radio for over 35 years. Jennifer is one of New Zealand’s most recognisable acting talents and a respected theatre director. She has taught for The Actors’ Program, Toi Whakaari and NASDA.

Jennifer is currently President of Equity New Zealand, Patron of Q Theatre, and serves as a trust board member of Arts Regional Trust and Actors Benevolent Fund. In the 2007 New Years Honours List, she was named an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to theatre and the community.

A travel allowance is available for selected Participants travelling from out of Auckland who are DEGNZ members.

Applicants must be comfortable with participating in front of their peers.

Successful Participant applicants will have experience directing narrative short films and have a narrative feature film in active development.

Directors Toolkit

Award-winning director Jason Stutter leads this two-day workshop, offering a practical guide to directing for emerging directors. The Directors Toolkit aims to establish a professional approach to filming and underline the keys to good work.

Over the weekend, we will cover working with professional actors, non-actors, and different scales of production crew. We will take you through pre-production, casting, production, post-production and how to get your final film out into the world of festivals and markets.

About Jason Stutter

Jason StutterJason Stutter’s first movie was cult kung-fu caper Tongan Ninja (2002). Since then he has alternated features – self-funded comedy Edwin: My Life as a Koont, stylish Ronald Hugh Morrieson adaptation Predicament – with shorts, including the hit Careful… series, riffing on the dangers of inattentive tool use. His most recent feature, haunted house tale The Dead Room, was released in New Zealand in 2015.

Directing Masterclass with Debra Granik at NZIFF 2018

Film director Debra Granik (Leave No Trace, Winter’s Bone) will lead a Directing Masterclass for filmmakers in Auckland as part of NZIFF 2018.

This is the first time NZIFF have been able to provide a Masterclass designed for industry practitioners, thanks to a new Artistic Development Partnership with Creative New Zealand. The Masterclass will be a half day course on Friday 27 July and will be run by the Directors & Editors Guild of NZ (DEGNZ) on behalf of NZIFF.

Debra Granik, known for her social realism film style, will take filmmakers through an interactive discussion of her work with a focus on Leave No Trace and Winter’s Bone. She will also share examples from her filmmaking influences and past and current documentary work.

Masterclass attendees are encouraged to see Leave No Trace at NZIFF beforehand (Friday 27 July, 10.45am at the Civic).

Limited tickets for the Directing Masterclass will be on sale from Ticketmaster at 9.00am on Monday 23 July.

About Debra Granik

Debra Granik is the director and co-writer of Winter’s Bone, which was nominated for four Oscars including Best Picture. It featured John Hawkes and Jennifer Lawrence in her breakthrough role. Granik and co-writer Anne Rosellini were also Oscar-nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Her first film, Down to the Bone, starring Vera Farmiga, won Granik the Best Director Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. In 2015 Granik completed Stray Dog, a feature documentary which aired on Independent Lens and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. Leave No Trace is her fourth feature, and it premiered at Sundance 2018 and screened as part of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. It stars Ben Foster and Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie.

 

Granik will introduce her film and hold Q+As at The Civic in Auckland and the Embassy Theatre in Wellington. New Zealand actress and lead star of the film, Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie, is also confirmed to join Debra Granik at the Saturday (Auckland) and Sunday (Wellington) screenings.

Wellington – Rehearsal & Performance with Director/Producer Simon Bennett

Rehearsal & Performance is a practical half-day workshop focused on developing directors and actors’ tools to build better director/actor relationships for on-screen results.

Guided by director/producer Simon Bennett, participants will explore a scene in groups (one director, two actors) in a safe and non-pressured environment. Lunch is provided.

Simon Bennett has worked extensively as a stage and screen director and producer since graduating from Toi Whakaari in 1988. In 1995, he moved into television work: first directing, then producing Shortland Street.

In the years since, Simon’s directing highlights have included five seasons of Outrageous Fortune (for which he won an Achievement in Directing award in the 2007 Air NZ Screen Awards), Sione’s 2: Unfinished Business, The Almighty Johnsons, and Spies and Lies.

The selected directors and actors will be expected to do some script prep beforehand. DEGNZ will provide the scene in advance.

The Rehearsal & Performance series is hosted by Directors & Editors Guild of NZ with the support of the Equity Foundation and funding from the New Zealand Film Commission.

TOTS Directors Toolkit with Chris Dudman – Nelson

Up-skill with this two-day practical guide to the directing process.

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ and Top of the South Film Production Society (TOTS) presents the second of two Top of the South Island Directors Toolkits with New Zealand director Chris Dudman.

This workshop will take place in Nelson.

About Chris Dudman

Chris’ career has involved writing and directing short films, commercials, feature and series documentary and series TV drama. He directed short film successes THE GRAFITTI OF MR TUPAIA and CHOICE NIGHT, and later co-wrote and directed HARRY, the gritty crime drama series starring Oscar Kightley and Sam Neill. He wrote and directed THE DAY THAT CHANGED MY LIFE, the multi-award winning documentary about Christchurch’s devastating earthquake. He most recently directed two standalone episodes of James Patterson’s true crime anthology series MURDER IS FOREVER for U.S. company Stephen David Entertainment. Chris was also a longtime partner of and director at Auckland TV commercials company Robber’s Dog.

Directors Tookit

Chris will explore the directing process from his own personal experience on a variety of directing assignments from commercials to long-form documentary, from short film to dramatic television series. He will discuss the way he prepares (analyses scripts, casts, rehearses actors, storyboards), the way he directs actors and camera, and the way he works with editors and composers during post-production.

Taking a warts and all approach, he will use highlights and low-points as examples showing how he adapts this process to the various forms of the work he’s directing. In doing so he’ll touch on the differences between being a gun for hire and working on projects he’s instigated, on collaboration and compromise, on the director/producer relationship, on making decisions under pressure, avoiding pitfalls, the role of chance and luck…

His intention is to create a dialogue in the workshop – about process and what is really involved in directing as a career…

And, most importantly, why it has been worth it.
