Series Big Hair, Don’t Care Premieres Tonight

From member Mฤซria George, one of this year’s participants in the Emerging Women Filmmakers Incubator, comes Big Hair, Don’t Care, a documentary web series. Its three episodes will be free to stream on Moana Nui, a specialist Indigenous-led digital theatre built by Shift72. The first episode premieres tonight.

Big Hair, Donโ€™t Care contributes to documenting the creative work of women across the stage and screen landscape. It features multiple award-winning stage and screen artists: Riwia Brown (Ngฤti Porou, Taranaki Whฤnui), DEGANZ member Dianna Fuemana (Mutalau, Niue; Pago Pago, American Samoa), Sarita Keo Kossamak So (Khmer, Aotearoa) and Moana Ete (Ngฤti Wheke, Ngฤti Whatua ลŒrakei & Lalomalava, Savaiโ€™i, Sฤmoa).

It is created and directed by Mฤซria George (Ngฤti Kearoa, Ngฤti Tuarฤ, Te Arawa; Te Tawera, Ngฤti Awa; Tumutevarovaro; Enuamanu; Kลซki โ€˜ฤ€irani). Wellington-based editors Timon Zeiss and Erin Murphy cut the series, which was filmed in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington in February 2020.

What began as a performance installation presented first in Hilo, Hawaiโ€™i, and then later in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa, in 2017, soon evolved away from the live โ€“ and in the digital. The series looks to share kลrero of equity and visibility for waฬ„hine Maฬ„ori, vaโ€™ine Pasifika and wฤhine tauiwi while addressing systemic issues throughout the stage and screen industry.

Guild Members Craft Murder on The Brokenwood Mysteries Season 8

The eighth season of hit series The Brokenwood Mysteries is available to stream on TVNZ+. The season finale aired on TVNZ One last Sunday on September 11. Well done to DEGANZ members Josh Frizzell, Jacqueline Nairn, Caroline Bell-Booth and Kerri Roggio who were involved in the making of this season.

Josh Frizzell directed episode one, Jacqueline Nairn directed episode three, and Caroline Bell-Booth directed episode five. The fourth episode was edited by Kerri Roggio. Each episode is a 2-hour telefeature.

The series โ€“ often dubbed New Zealandโ€™s answer to Britainโ€™s Midsomer Murders โ€“ follows police detectives Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea), Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) and Daniel Chalmers (Jarod Rawiri) as they solve often bizarre murders in the small, but deadly, town of Brokenwood.

The Brokenwood Mysteries is still one of the most popular murder mysteries streaming on Acorn TV in the United States and the United Kingdom and boasts fan bases in France, Denmark, Italy and Australia.

Watch Trailer for Dame Valerie Adams: MORE THAN GOLD

The trailer is out for feature documentary Dame Valerie Adams: MORE THAN GOLD, directed by Briar March and produced by DEGANZ member Leanne Pooley. The film follows the candid and inspirational story of Dame Valerie Adams, one of the worldโ€™s most celebrated athletes.

It is a story of a mother, a daughter, a sister and a survivor. At a time when sportswomen globally are struggling with pressures beyond the field of play, Dame Valerie Adams is a beacon of hope.

Leanne states, โ€œIโ€™m very proud to have made an honest film about a kiwi icon that goes way beyond the ordinary โ€˜sportsโ€™ documentary. Dame Valerie opened herself up, sharing a story of resilience and tenacity that is almost incomprehensible. If it was fiction no one would believe it.โ€

Dame Valerie Adams: MORE THAN GOLD will have its nationwide cinema release on October 20, 2022.

Show Me Shorts 2022 Programme Unveiled

The programme for the 2022 Show Me Shorts Film Festival has been unveiled, with multiple DEGANZ members featured. Congratulations to the following members.

The award-winning Perianayaki, directed by Bala Murali Shingade and edited by Shailesh Prajapati, has been selected to screen at Show Me Shorts as part of the Lifeโ€™s Detours programme.

In the Aotearoa Woven programme, multiple DEGANZ members will be screening as well. Disrupt, directed by Jennifer Te Atamira Ward-Lealand and edited by Lisa Greenfield, is part of this programme. Sista, directed by Chantelle Buygoyne and edited by Annie Collins, has been selected alongside Rebecca Tansleyโ€™s The Finding.

The music video for Dick Moveโ€™s single Ladies Night, directed by Stella Reid (DEGANZ Incubator 2020), will screen as part of the Twisted Twilight programme.

Datsun, directed by Mark Albiston and edited by DEGANZ member Luke Haigh, can be found in The Sampler programme.

Show Me Shorts is Aotearoaโ€™s leading international short film festival. It is an Academy Awards-accredited festival screening this October in more than 30 cinemas nationwide, with some sessions available online.
