There are just 7 days left to donate to the Boosted crowdfunding campaign for Vivie, a heart-warming tale about a woman and her relationship with her body. DEGANZ member Hweiling Ow is the short film’s writer and director and is joined by producers Mia Maramara (DEGANZ) and Morgan Leigh Stewart.
The Boosted campaign ends on 29 May. Funds raised will help create a human-sized vagina costume for the shortโs heroine.
A story about personal consent, Vivie follows Amy, who has a love/hate relationship with her vagina. Every time she tries to have sex with a new lover, her vagina – Vivie, will not give her the pleasure to do so. Amy gets increasingly frustrated with Vivie for that, and equally, Vivie is frustrated with Amy for not listening to her. It all comes to head when Amy is in mid-coitus, and Vivie, again refuses to allow her the intimate moment she so desires.
After months of waiting, the trailer for Nude Tuesday has dropped this week, capturing the unique comedyโs entirely made-up language and eccentric characters.
Written by DEGANZ memberย Jackie van Beek and directed by member Armaฤan Ballantyne, the film follows a conservative middle-aged couple, played by Jackie van Beek and Damon Herriman, who are on a mission to save a failing marriage. The couple end up at a new-age relationship retreat rich in sexual liberation and extreme nudity.
The movie also stars Jesse Griffin (DEGANZ), Jemaine Clement, Jodie Rimmer, Chris Parker and Yvette Parsons.
The film is set to release on 16 June in cinemas. In the meantime, watch the trailer below.

Charlotte Evans is a film director based in Auckland, New Zealand. She started her film career in London in 2008, where she trained as an editor under Rick Waller. Since returning to NZ, Charlotte has worked as a freelance director and editor on various projects ranging from TVCs, music videos, TV series, documentaries and short films. She is currently in the final stages of post-production for her soon to be released documentary Nowhere To Be.
Jack Woon is a Kiwi-Malaysian multi-hyphenate filmmaker with over a decade of cross-cultural experience in New Zealand, China, Samoa, India, Czechia and Canada. He has edited three commercially successful micro-budget Pacific Island comedy features, including Three Wise Cousins and Hibiscus & Ruthless.
Jeremiah Tauamiti is a Kiwi Samoan who started his career as a camera operator on television show Fresh. He then went on to direct films of his own, including shorts Maria and Liliu. In 2019 he co-directed his first feature, For My Fatherโs Kingdom, with partner Vea Mafile’o. The documentary, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, is about Mafile’o’s Tongan father, Saia.

Documentary shorts Ultimately Lacks Polish and Nathan Joe: Homecoming Poems have premiered on the streaming platform Vidzing. Commissioned by the Going West Writers Festival, both documentaries focus on poets who take a radical approach to performance. Congratulations to our members who worked on these films!
Ultimately Lacks Polish was directed by DEGANZ Wellington-based member Kathleen Winter. Following New Zealand poet Freya Daly Sadgrove as she dares to combine poetry, punk, sex, and theatre, Polish also explores Freyaโs mindful reflections on her artistry. Kathleenโs frequent collaborator Amanda Mulderry (DEGANZ) edited the documentary.
Auckland member Nahyeon Leeย directed Nathan Joe: Homecoming Poems, where poet Nathan Joe explores his feelings about being caught between queerness and being a Chinese-New Zealander. In this magnetic three poem meditation, Nahyeon brings Nathanโs words to life with striking visuals.
Both documentary shorts are now available on-demand on Vidzing. The Going West Writers Festival is operating a pay as you want option, where viewers can watch for free or support their kaupapa with a donation.

How do you work with children to get great performances?
This May, the Directors and Editors Guild of Aotearoa New Zealand is offering training on directing children with sought-after acting coach Miranda Harcourt. Directors can apply for the day-long workshop in Auckland on May 7 or tune in to a 2-hour Zoom seminar on May 11, on a Wednesday night.
Workshop
From her years of experience working as an actor, acting coach and director, Miranda Harcourt has developed quick, simple tools to get child actors where they need to be. On May 7, participants will spend a full-day with Miranda learning approaches, tools and exercises that will help you to help your child actors give their best.
We will also have a few young actors helping us out at the workshop and two directors will have the opportunity to rehearse a scene.

In this online seminar, Miranda Harcourt will discuss some of her successful tools for working with child actors.
